What is it?
We are now accepting used and vintage items for sale through our store on a consignment basis. What is consignment? It’s a way for you to sell your clothes in a real store catering directly to your customer base without needing to relinquish ownership until your item sells. Consignment will often get you a higher price than selling to a secondhand store outright, and your item will often sell faster than it would in a private sale.
In a nutshell, you are providing your item for sale in our store (and web site, depending on the item). When it sells, you get a percentage of the price and we do too. If it doesn’t sell after 90 days, you pick it up and keep it. If we agree, you may be able to re-up your agreement for another 90 days. In a sense, you are renting space in our store to sell your item, with the payment coming out of the selling price.
Our deal with you
Our percentage split is 60/40. You get 60% of the selling price and we get 40%. This is a pretty standard deal in New York consignment – some New York consignment stores are even 50/50.
What we’ll sell
What we’re looking for are authentic Japanese street fashion brands – no replicas or copies, no non-Japanese brands. This is not a judgment on quality. Chanel makes some pretty good clothes but they’re not our style any more than Chinese or Korean brands are. Our identity is Japanese clothes. If you’ve got non-Japanese clothes you want to sell, try the store next door to us (Rue St. Denis) – that’s all they do.
Tags must be intact, readable and authentic. (Yes, there are fakes out there.) All clothing must be in at least excellent condition and reasonably recent. We reserve the right to refuse any item for any reason.
How to do it
For the moment, all consignment must be done in person. If we can work out a way to deal with the logistics of long-distance consignment at a later date, then we will announce that.
We have a fairly standard consignment form that you can either fill out in store or download and print in advance, then bring to the store with your item(s). All consignment forms must be signed and dated and contain an itemized list of items to be consigned. It’s a good idea to wait to fill it out until we look at your clothes.
